ABOUT DENNIS ASHBAUGH
Dennis Ashbaugh is one of the most significant and highly respected artists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, an internationally acclaimed artist with paintings in most major museums and most important public collections in Europe, America and Asia.
As much as possible, Ashbaugh has studiously avoided being labeled or categorized by various "isms" that have characterized most of the great works made in New York City since his birth in 1946: Minimalism, Abstract Expressionism, Popism, op art, color field painting, conceptualism, neo- geo.
He has stated that he has “pivoted away from these various art movements, as they are, generally speaking, artificial constructs which vacuum away just about all freedom.” The constant through-line of Ashbaugh’s abstract work is on specific current events that capture his interests, seen through the entire prism of art history. He concentrates serially on different aspects that grip both his and the contemporary consciousness, such as the future, politics, viruses, DNA, insects, identity, technology, and the culture at large.
Ashbaugh resides in River House in New York City, and also lives and works in Millbrook and Pawling, New York.
